Director of Legal and Compliance – Financial Services
We are proud to be working with an award-winning building society, that likes to “think outside the box” and offers savings and mortgage products that are deliberately different to align with the challenges and pressures that today’s society faces. Its innovative products are frequently winning awards and commendations.
With over 125 years of trading history and nearly 70,000 account holders this building society is not afraid to be forward-thinking and is routinely consulted on marketing-leading reports and quoted in the mainstream media.
Yet despite its success and accolades our client has kept to its principles of helping being real human beings, adopting minimum jargon and providing excellent personal service. It follows its values of being a family, always learning and respecting each other.
Due to retirement, our client is seeking a new Director of Legal and Compliance, and we are pleased to bring this exciting, challenging and rewarding vacancy to the market.
This position is a wide and varied in content and to be able fulfil this role, you must be a senior financial services lawyer, with at least 15+ years’ PQE of knowledge and expertise across (retail) banking and finance. Specific knowledge of mortgages would be highly advantageous and candidates with this experience will be prioritised. As the Director of Legal and Compliance you will be required to advise and support across many areas of law, regulatory issues and ensure the organisation is compliant with all necessary rules and regimes. The legal team is currently around 10 people, and you will have two direct reports.
The postholder will also be the Society Secretary and the MLRO, will be a member of ExCo and various other committees, providing critical support to the Board and senior management team. Therefore, you must have the confidence and gravitas to work at the board level and prior experience of stakeholder management is essential. Having strong communication skills and being able to build relationships will be crucial for the success of this appointment.
The society has relied on the pragmatic advice of the outgoing Director for many years, and the management team is seeking somebody who is straight-talking, down-to-earth and displays strong commercial acumen to guide the society through the complex legal and regulatory landscape it operates in. However, we are also seeking an individual who can join and put their own stamp on the role. You must be ready to embrace, and perhaps lead change, where it is needed. The building society has big plans for the future and is seeking a talented individual who can make a real contribution and help it grow.
